In-Class

For this in-class activity you are going to make predictions of your own. We have seen some "futuristic" interfaces previously, but now let's put ourselves in the position of a futurist who must forecast 10 or 20 years out what the world will look like. Below are the constraints to guide you.

    Tasks/Constraints:
  1. Group up with folks around you.
  2. Introduce yourself, and take a moment to make a prediction about the future 10-20 years out. It can be inspired by media, or your own ideas.
  3. Choose a user interface or technology and discuss how it could be updated based on your prediction.
  4. Based on this prediction (whether it is human or computer centered), discuss how the interface will change.
  5. Some tools for discussion:
    • What will need to be unlearned?
    • Wacky or silly ideas are fine.
    • Is the system or user more in control?
    • Is gamification involved?
    • Will humans become more or less dependent on the particular technology.
    • Is your prediction something you want to live in, or avoid?

    Example of exercise:
  1. Prediction: Cryptocurrency will replace the physical currencies.
  2. Paypal for example will allow users to pay for services using cryptocurrencies (e.g. bitcoin).
  3. The user interface will have an additional dropdown for paying in cryptocurrencies.
    • Initially using paypal there will be incentives to pay with cryptocurrencies (1% off a purchase).
    • Paypal will have have a menu discussing why the currency is better.
    • People will become more comfortable with not carrying a wallet.
    • There will be no physical money card, Names and passwords will be linked to money accounts as previously done with Paypal.
    • Paypal will also have a user interface for converting dollars and foreign currencies to cryptocurrency.
    • The interface will look something like this....

Grading

Note that in-class activities are part of your participation grade, and participating will help you perform well on your assignments. You do not have to formally submit anything, (however I take notes of who participated!).
